The Godfather’s Choice of Fine Wines

Coppola Wines are created to showcase and recognise the diverse winegrowing region of Sonoma County California. Francis Ford Coppola has been in the movie industry for over three decades and he has been in the wine making business for over two decades. Most people who are not avid wine connoisseurs don’t realise that the person who directed the “Godfather” movies is the same person who is behind the delicious Coppola wines.

More than twenty years ago Frank Coppola purchased the Rubicon Estate and founded the Niebaum Coppola Winery which is located in Rutherford California. Coppola and his wife first bought the estate to turn it into a vacation home and for Frank to continue his wine making hobby. What started as a hobby turned into Coppola’s winery being recognised for quality wines at reasonable prices. Today the Francis Ford Coppola Winery is being completely renovated. When renovations are completed there will be a larger roomier tasting room, a restaurant and you will be able to see displays of Francis Coppola’s movie memorabilia which includes his five Oscars.

Two wines from the Coppla Winery won gold medals at the 2009 Harvest Fair Wine Awards. The 2007 Francis Coppola Reserve Chardonnay and the 2007 Votre Santé Pinot Noir were the gold winners. The Chardonnay has a melody of crisp fruitful flavor and a hint of butterscotch and clove. It retails for around $15 per bottle. The Santé Pinot Noir has a silky texture and bright acidity and has the crisp taste of cranberries blended with strawberries and cinnamon. The retail price for this delicious wine is around $ 27 per bottle.

In 1995 Francis purchased the remaining part of the original estate, which included the massive stone Inglenook Chateau and its vineyards. Rubicon is the winery’s flagship wine and total production has risen dramatically since 1995. In 1995 the case production was around 1,000 cased per year and now the production is over 50,000 per year.

The 2000 Rubicon is a rich and vibrant wine that is cleverly balanced. There are layers of complexity with currant, blackberry and earthy flavors combined to give it a solid backbone. There were 5,365 cases made of this hearty wine and it retails for around $150 per bottle.

Corey Beck is the general manager and winemaker at Coppla. Corey has added many new lines to the winery. He is the responsible for making the Diamond Collection and Rosso & Bianco brands what they are today. He is also the genius behind four new brands. The Encyclopedia is a collection of imported wines which are packaged in custom shaped bottles. They retail for around $13 per bottle. The Votre Santé is a pair of burgundies styled wines made from grapes on the Sonoma Coast. This exquisite wine retails for around $20 per bottle. The Francis Coppola Reserve is a collection of Sonoma label designated wines which are only available the winery. These unique wines retail from $30 to $60 per bottle depending which you prefer. The Directors Cut is Corey’s personal expression of the diverse and unique grapes in the Sonoma Valley. The price per bottle averages around $20 per bottle.
